Age Appropriate Preventative Exams

We have all been reminded of the importance of prevention for acute illnesses the last year and a half, but are you keeping up to date on your age appropriate preventative exams? You may not be aware of what you need to have done and at what age. We’ve included this succinct list to help guide you. “An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure.” Please be sure to discuss preventative exams with our providers, as you may have genetic or other risk factors that changes the timing for you.

Ages 20-30

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol screening 1-2 times in this decade of life
  • Self breast exam monthly
  • STI screening for sexually active people annually or with any new sexual partner
  • Pap test every 1-3 years depending on your risk, number of partners and previous exams.

Ages 30-40

  • Same as 20-30 year olds, plus:
  • Physician breast exam yearly
  • Pap test every 2-3 years or Pap plus HPV every 5 years (this is also dependant upon your risk, number of partners and previous exams).

Ages 40-50

  • Same as 20-40 year olds, plus:
  • Mammogram every 1-2 years
  • Cholesterol screening every 1-3 years beginning at age 45
  • Blood pressure screening annually
  • Colonoscopy every 10 years starting at 45 years old or Fecal Occult Blood screening yearly

Ages 50+

  • Mammogram yearly
  • Diabetes screening every 1-3 years
  • Cholesterol screening every 1-3 years beginning at age 45
  • Blood pressure screening annually
  • Bone density testing after menopause with risk factors or after age 65 without risk factors.
  • Pap test every 2-3 years or Pap plus HPV every 5 years (stop at age 65)
