Deciding to start a family can be a very exciting time, but it can also come with many questions, worries, and challenges. Whether you are just beginning to think about conceiving or have already been trying without a pregnancy, we are here to support you.
In the U.S., infertility rates have been increasing, with 1 in 5 women unable to get pregnant after one year of trying, and 1 in 4 women experiencing difficulty getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term. Multiple factors contribute to these statistics, including later-age conception, environmental toxin exposure, nutrition, and more.
There are certain foundational aspects of health that I work on with all patients, which can greatly impact fertility: nutrition, sleep, stress management, and environmental factors. Diets high in vegetables, fruits, protein, and fiber provide the essential nutrients necessary for hormone balance and the ability to conceive. Conversely, trans fats and diets high in red and processed meats, sweets, and sweetened beverages have been found to negatively affect fertility.
Sleep is crucial, as women with poor quality sleep or who get less than seven hours each night have lower rates of fertility. High levels of stress are associated with longer times to conceive and a higher risk of infertility. Environmental toxins, including heavy metals, pesticides, and plastics, can disrupt hormone balance and harm reproductive organs. By ensuring proper nutrition, adequate sleep, effective stress management, and reducing environmental toxin exposure as much as possible, we can create the foundation for optimal fertility.
In addition to addressing these health foundations, it’s important to identify and address any individual barriers to fertility. I gather a detailed history of menstrual cycle patterns and order lab work to identify any hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, or metabolic factors that need to be addressed. Genetic testing may be considered in certain cases. Pelvic floor therapy and abdominal massage are excellent ways to support the body by increasing blood flow to the pelvis and improving follicular health. We also offer support for those utilizing advanced reproductive technology, such as IUI or IVF.
Wherever you are on your fertility journey, we’re here to support you. Whether you are beginning to think about becoming a parent, wishing you were already pregnant, or seeking support while undergoing conventional treatment, we have many ways to support you and your chance of a successful pregnancy.
